A few Sundays ago I was sitting in a coffee shop watching the world go by, thinking about the week ahead. What would I do this week? Probably the same as always. What would I achieve this week? Probably nothing new. That’s when it dawned on me. I am so far into my comfort zone that I’m becoming lazy, demotivated and, well, bored. Very, very bored.
It’s so difficult to pull yourself away from what you know. What you do day-to-day, routines, lifestyles, what you know works. But how can you expect to get new results if you’re doing the same old thing? How can you expect to progress, if you’re not doing anything to aid progression?
Life is a funny thing. You know what they say: if it doesn’t rain, it pours. Sometimes multiple things go wrong at once and you reach a crossroads. When you reach it, you either carry on the way that you have been, doing all the same things, with the same results, or you make a change. You take a different direction. It’s not an easy decision to make and it takes real courage to take a different direction in life, to stray away from everything you know.
When this happens, I think of life as an arrow. It sounds cliché, but it really is true. When you pull an arrow back, it launches forward. When life pulls you back, you launch forward. But often, I’ve found, you have to go backwards for a bit first.
Sometimes, going back to square one is the best thing for you. Take a different view. Be open minded. Take a chance on something different – you never know where you might end up.
