Why Your Comfort Zone Is Doing Nothing For You

A few Sundays ago I was sitting in a coffee shop watching the world go by, thinking about the week ahead. What would I do this week? Probably the same as always. What would I achieve this week? Probably nothing new. That’s when it dawned on me. I am so far into my comfort zone that I’m becoming lazy, demotivated and, well, bored. Very, very bored.

It’s so difficult to pull yourself away from what you know. What you do day-to-day, routines, lifestyles, what you know works. But how can you expect to get new results if you’re doing the same old thing? How can you expect to progress, if you’re not doing anything to aid progression?

THE ARROW

Life is a funny thing. You know what they say: if it doesn’t rain, it pours. Sometimes multiple things go wrong at once and you reach a crossroads. When you reach it, you either carry on the way that you have been, doing all the same things, with the same results, or you make a change. You take a different direction. It’s not an easy decision to make and it takes real courage to take a different direction in life, to stray away from everything you know.

When this happens, I think of life as an arrow. It sounds cliché, but it really is true. When you pull an arrow back, it launches forward. When life pulls you back, you launch forward. But often, I’ve found, you have to go backwards for a bit first.

Sometimes, going back to square one is the best thing for you. Take a different view. Be open minded. Take a chance on something different – you never know where you might end up.

I love that arrow analogy! So true! And makes it so much more comforting to think going backwards isn’t all bad because it’s just preparing you for the great big step you’re about to take!

You’re completely right though, in order to do that we need to step out of our comfort zone – something I’m sure we’re all guilty of getting all snug inside! And something very difficult to do, but so worth it!

Hope to hear about you exiting your comfort zone soon and all the amazingness it will bring you!

You are so right! I struggle with anxiety and getting out of a routine is a bit scary to me. We are in control of our lives and what we do with them though. So when that anxiety pulls me back, I’m going to launch forward like the arrow. 🙂

Yes, I completely agree! I’m currently in my backwards stage and you see so many more options. Life could be anything now, it’s kind of freeing in a way. “You can’t grow when you’re comfortable” – my favourite quote at the moment.
