Warning: this could potentially become very ranty.
If you know me personally or have read my body shaming rant post you will know that this is a subject that I feel very passionately about. Body shaming is a massive issue for me. I’ve noticed on social media that many people seem to think that ‘skinny shaming isn’t a thing’. If you have this view, open your eyes. I have been made to feel incredibly unconfident and upset about numerous comments about my weight – or lack of it – and I really think this needs to stop. So here are some of the things I’ve heard which just shouldn’t be said to any other human being. So don’t say them.
‘You’ve got no meat on you, no wonder you’re cold!’
I have heard this at least once every Winter since I was about 14. Firstly, referring to the body as ‘meat’ is absolutely disgusting and secondly, thanks for the helpful comment – I’m sure I’ll warm right up now!
‘Do you have trouble finding clothes in your size?’
This is one I had from somebody at work and I’ve actually only heard it once but I thought it was so rude I just had to include it. At the time I didn’t have a clue what to say because I was so shocked but looking back now, there’s loads I should have said. Firstly, why? Why would I have trouble buying clothes? Am I like really abnormal or something? Believe it or not, every shop I can think of stocks clothes in my size and I have absolutely no trouble at all when it comes to shopping.
‘You don’t eat much, do you?’ (In patronising tone)
Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. Actually, I’m known at work as the one who is constantly eating something. I don’t diet. And no, I don’t have an eating disorder. I just have a crazy fast metabolism and if my metabolism – which is totally out of my power, I’d like to add – offends you, then I think you’re a dick.
‘Eat a hamburger.’
I do, regularly. Particularly a fan of Gourmet Burger Kitchen and the good old McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger. Does that suffice?
‘You smoke, that’s why you don’t eat!’
Yes that’s the exact reason I smoke, because it makes me lose weight, nothing to do with the fact I’m addicted to nicotine. And yes, I don’t eat anything at all. Ever. In fact, I’ve never eaten anything in my life. I just smoke all that hunger away. Get a grip.
